"I ordered 2 of these pieces. They were very well packed and my husband assembled them in a few hours. They look great just as pictured. I am very pleased with the look, however they lack functionality. The drawers look large and give the impression that they fit a lot of files, but do not. My solution was not to use the provided slides. I purchased adjustable hanging frames at my local office supply, now the drawers are fully utilized. This is why I give them a 4 star."

"Beautiful piece of furniture. Drawers don't close as smoothly as they might; you have to close them with a little authority, or they pop back out about half an inch. The drawers are wide enough to accommodate legal-size files, but convertible so you can use them for letter-size also if you wish. But then, as in my case, you have a bunch of unused space on the sides of each drawer. It's a shame because the drawers are just barely too wide from front to back, or I could turn the hanging files to hang sideways in the drawers and get more files in there that way. I'm going to try to narrow the drawers just a tad from front to back so I can rig them for the files to hang in that direction and get more use of out of them. Overall, good value for the money (esp. since I waited for the sale and got free shipping), but for sure not a perfectly engineered piece."

Beautiful console, but it takes some work!

"I recently purchased this file console for a client. It is very nice, quite sturdy and has a wonderful unique and stylish quality to it since it looks more like a piece of furniture rather than a file cabinet. I must say that the assembly does take some time (approx. 2 hours). It has quite a few parts, which are all included...no problem there, but you need to know what you are doing if you are going to assemble it yourself."

"I was hesitant to order furniture sight unseen. But it is a pleasant surprise-good looking, heavy, sturdy furniture.
Surprise-some assembly required means you build it pretty much from all individual components. I took the 13 pages of instructions and set aside a full day. Surprise- it took only 4 hours, that including a take apart and re-assemble caused by an oversight on my part at one of the middle steps. Be sure to follow directions exactly! The color is not what I expected and the attempt at distressing and antiquing is lame, but not a deal breaker. So the biggest surprise-a 68 year old woman did it alone with no help. Even though it is very heavy finished, assembly process allows each completed piece to be put in place by one person."

"It was in perfect condition when it arrived, well packed, no damage. Since the directions said it took 2 to assemble, I waited for my husband before I started. It was really quite easy, the only thing I really needed help with was lifting the top and putting it on. One of the rare purchases that sent "extra" items (screws, etc) in case they were needed. It is as beautiful as the pictures. As other reviewers stated, the drawer space is really limited. The 2 drawers barely took the files I had in 1 and 1/2 drawers of a vertical file. If it was just made for the files to go left to right instead of front to back it would have much more room."

"This filing cabinet looks nice in my office. It is very stylish. My favorite feature is that it doesn't have the harsh metal on metal sound of a normal filing cabinet when it opens and closes. Very quiet. Can hold legal or regular sized files. If you put regular sized files in it, the drawers are much wider so you can store some small office supplies inside, too. You can't open both drawers at the same time or it will fall over. If you plan to do that, attach it to a wall. We only open one drawer at a time and it works well. The top is grooved, not flat. Since it is wide and not deep, you can't get the traditional filing cabinet amount of files into the cabinet. They could have turned the files the other way and gotten a lot more in, but if you don't have a massive amount of filing, it's perfect. Just right for a home office, or if you want to store files in your den or kitchen or even the bedroom. The biggest drawback to this is that it is kind of low so if you are used to having files up at eye level so you can read the labels it is a little adjustment to make. But, you can put a lot of things on top, so that makes up for it. It is quite heavy and sturdy and well made. It comes in two boxes so make sure you have both before you begin building it."

"I first purchased the writing desk - and immediately after that decided that I also needed the file console. It came in 2 boxes, and the instructions suggested that it needed 2 people to put it together - not true. There was only myself, and I had absolutely no problems, even with the drawer slides. Everything lined up properly and it looks great!"

"I absolutely love my blue Provence File Console! You cannot tell it was meant for home assembly, unless you looked at the back. It was amazingly economically priced for what I was getting. It looks much more expensive. The piece is mostly hardwood, but painted masonite or mdf(?) for part of the drawers and the backboard to keep the price down I suspect, but all of it is hidden and it does not even detract from the piece. All the visible parts are hardwood. Beautiful cabriole legs and corner details. Lovely classic curves with a current shabby chic appeal. I am using it as a sofa table console because it is so lovely. You cannot even tell it is a file console! Very sturdy piece of furniture considering there is no gluing and it was home assembled. The left drawer worked like a dream. The right drawer is not nearly as smooth, but it still works fine. I attribute it to perhaps the human element in assembly. I would buy another one in green if I had a place to put it! Matches my robin's egg blue and green decor perfectly!"

"Our guest bedroom needed a makeover. Needs change and we needed to get my computer out of the kitchen but still needed a guest bedroom. The Provence File Console was so perfect that we also purchased the mirrored bookcase and the writing desk from the Provence collection. Clear instructions. Parts in labeled plastic bags.My husband is very handy and did not have any difficulty with the assembly. I was intimidated by the assembly but would have paid someone to but it together because it was exactly what I wanted and could not find any country French file cabinets. Very practical, useful and inviting area; thank you,HOME DECORATORS."

"Provance file console came in two boxes. Instructions were incredibly detailed, made sense, and were 100% correct. The final product looks exactly as it did in the catalog. I am very happy. I would make one suggestion - while I knew it required assembly, nowhere in the catalog did it mention assembly, nor give an estimate of how long it might take. That should be added. For me it took less than an hour. If I have a need for similar item, I will definitely check out the Home Decorators collection!"

"We purchased the entire office set for our home. We wanted something practical but not too expensive, since it is just for a temporary office. When we compared the price/quailty to what is available at local stores like Target/Wal-Mart, the furniture is MUCH BETTER quality and style. No this is NOT solid wood furniture, but it is VERY GOOD QUALITY.
Another pro is the EXTREMELY good shipping packing. 2 of the boxes were HEAVILY damaged by UPS, but because of the AWESOME packing, the interior contents were not harmed at all."
