Take my advise.....
Date:November 11, 2010
"Seriously do not even try using the allen wrench and screws that are for the shelves. Go buy new screws at the store, they will strip! The other hardware was fine. Otherwise after I got the appropriate screws life was easy. The shelf looks great after assembly. Good customer service, I had a missing part and they expidited it to me prior to a party."

Awful Hardware - Allen Screws
Date:October 12, 2010
"I've put together a lot of assembly furniture over the course of my life and have also purchased more than just this one item from your company. In the past, I've had no problems however this time, the quality of the large allen screws (20) was terrible and that coupled with holes drilled into the piece of furniture which were too small created a lot of problems and an inability to even screw in the screws at all. We ended up buy regular phillips head screws for $12. Then, by using a drill with a phillips head bit, we assembled the bookcase very easily.
It wasn't an additional expense that I wanted however I didn't have much choice."

Poor purchase
Date:August 31, 2010
"The assembly is very difficult. We spent a whole day setting it up but fail to put the middle part together. Next day We bought some additional tools and finally put it together. The bookshelf looks good after we set it up. But I would not recommend anyone to buy it unless they are really good at assembling and don't mind all those hassles. The service is really good though."

Date:June 29, 2010
"Received within 3 days, in good shape. The only problem we had was the assembly. The lock screws did't attach, took 2 to hold and an electric drill to tighten, they will stripe if not careful. Very pleased with the product after we got them together, very sturdy."

mission 56" bookshelf
Date:June 16, 2010
"book shelf looks good after put together, middle section had to be put together with T brackets purchased seperately to hold the middle together, the cam bolts and locks are not enough to hold it and the long braces are only held into the shelves with wooden dowels in the middle...shelves kept wanting to fold into itself in the middle with assembly or when moved...i would recommend this product with additional instructions on how to secure the middle of the bookshelf"

Unbelievably poor quality
Date:June 11, 2010
"This bookshelf is lovely, but it was a bear to put together. The locking bolts that were shipped with the product were completely stripped on arrival - I had to make my own wooden dowels and glue them into place for the bookshelf to even function. The Allen wrench that came with the bookshelf was useless. Fortunately I had my own. The price is cheap for a reason. Buy this product only if you're prepared to use your own hardware."

What a mistake!
Date:May 27, 2010
"This was exactly the style and size I was looking for, so I chose to ignore the previous reviewers comments about poor quality and difficult assembly. I thought it couldn't be that bad. It was! Poorly finished shelves and useless hardware - the assembly tool failed within the first few minutes. It has taken 2 people, a bottle of glue, a number of screws and 2 turnbuckles to put it together. If you're handy and have a well-stocked toolbox, go for it. Pros: quick delivery, well packaged, good appearance. Con: everything else. Moral-trust the consensus of reviews."

Minor Problems
Date:March 26, 2010
"Overall I am satisfied with this unit. It is nicer in person than the picture.
The only problems were with the assembly.
(1) There were screws missing from the hardware packet. (2)The allen wrench and the screws are made from cheap slag with the result that the screw heads & tool were both shot very quickly. (3) The directions were very small, almost all graphics, and combined many steps into one picture. As a result, some steps were missed and so I had to go back and start again (hard with stripped screw heads).

Will it hold books?
Date:February 28, 2010
"While the bookcase is attractive, it was nearly impossible to assemble as shelving and supports were warped, pre-drilled holes were not aligned and connecting screws and rods did not engage. When righted after assembly (following instructions) shelves collapsed. Shelving and supports needed supplemental screws, so it would stand intact. I am uncertain whether the bookcase can actually hold books without collapsing."

"Of all the purchases it is by far the worst. Lag bolts would not go in withous stripping. I had to buy new bolt to install with.
I had to nail the back end together just so it would stay together.
I have put together many of these types of furniture and this was the worst by far."

Disappointment
Date:October 13, 2009
"I bought two of the 5-shelf bookcases because I loved the design. Then, they arrived. Unfortunately, the way that the shelves look in my apartment is much different than the way they appear on the website. The wood is a really beautiful color true to advertising. But assembly was such a major challenge that one of my bookshelves is lopsided and the other one is in pieces on the floor, awaiting the help of a professional contractor. The huge problem is the screws. The instructions tell you to build this thing with an included Allen wrench and to make them finger-tight. During assembly, 65 percent of the screws stripped. The shelves couldn't be properly secured to the supporting components, and the result was a lopsided final product that shifts around while bearing a load and also while empty.
I built the first one myself and was very disappointed with the results. So I recruited my brother to help with the second one, thinking that a Y chromosome and another pair of hands would help. Well, the same thing happened. After a few hours of effort we didn't finish the job because the final product was clearly going to be another disaster. Customer service was courteous and refunded a portion of the shelves' cost, but that money is going straight to a professional who can fix the train wreck in my living room. Why didn't I just return them for a full refund? Too much hassle. Waiting for them to arrive and then dealing with getting the massive packages up to my apartment was trouble enough. And I do like the design enough to try to fix the shelves now that they're here. However, I would not make a repeat transaction, or recommend these to anyone else."

OK but not great
Date:September 20, 2009
"This was very hard to put together. The screws needed to be put in by an allen wrench and it was very hard. We bought other screws to use. Then some of the other hardware provided did not work and we had to buy other things. Then when all was said and done, the bookcase seemed wobbly, so we bought more hardware to try to stabilize it."

Nice Bookshelf, Serious Design Flaw
Date:September 14, 2009
"This is the largest unit of an attractive line, and should be perfect for a large room. I purchased two. In fact it would be perfect, except for one glaring flaw that, if not corrected, would make it hard for me to recommend to anyone.
The unit assembles basically as two halves, and the linkage is the problem. It's accomplished through six clasps on the shelves of one side that are intended to catch six posts that protrude from the shelves of the other side. The clasps are small, and unless both clasps and posts are positioned just right, will fail to catch. The directions are of no help with this: I learned by doing on the first unit, did better on the second. The clasps are a soft metal, aluminum I think, and so softer than the tools used with them, and too easily subject to damage. And there is no clear "click" or any other signal that they're locked in place.
Except for the clasp-and-post arrangement and the mantle top, there is no further bracing for the unit, another bad mistake. My units are up and look good, but I dread ever trying to move them. I can see them all too easily coming to pieces in the movers' hands.
As with the other units of this series, the wrench provided consists of the same brass material as the screws it is intended to tighten. With great care, it can be made to last for the entire assembly, but if it were steel, there would be no risk.
One more point: Home Decorators needs to do a much better job to lower shipping charges."

Looks good.....
Date:September 9, 2009
"This book shelf looks really nice now that it is together. However, I can say that I have never had an "out-of-the-box" project with so many problems. I had to redrill almost every hole because the screws were much too big for the holes, then, the head so EIGHT of the screws stripped as I was putting them in, even after having the bigger holes so there was not too much tension. I had to replace them."

Happy with purchase.
Date:August 4, 2009
"Bookcase came well packed, no damage. Laid on living room floor for two days until I read and understood parts and had time to put it together! I worked slowly, with coffee breaks to review what I'd done and how to take next step. Took five hours to complete. Many would take less time! I wanted it right.
Used wood glue on back dowels. Machining very accurate. Takes a little bit of wrist energy with all the "twist-lock" connectors.
Great finished product. Consistant finish, sturdy construction. It's "real" furniture that replaced three old, sagging, "bargain" bookcases. Like the "open" design. I think it was a good purchase and well worth the cost and effort. Thanks.

Great bookcase
Date:June 24, 2009
"This bookcase is absolutely beautiful, well constructed, and looks MUCH more expensive than it was. My office is now organized, but also beautiful. I would recommend this bookcase to anyone wanting a classic Mission style, or even Asian style. I had someone else put it together for me, and the only thing he had problems with were making the screw covers stay in. Had I been doing it, I simply would have added a touch of wood glue.
Go ahead and buy this--you will love it.
