Disappointment
Date: October 13, 2009
"I bought two of the 5-shelf bookcases because I loved the design. Then, they arrived. Unfortunately, the way that the shelves look in my apartment is much different than the way they appear on the website. The wood is a really beautiful color true to advertising. But assembly was such a major challenge that one of my bookshelves is lopsided and the other one is in pieces on the floor, awaiting the help of a professional contractor. The huge problem is the screws. The instructions tell you to build this thing with an included Allen wrench and to make them finger-tight. During assembly, 65 percent of the screws stripped. The shelves couldn't be properly secured to the supporting components, and the result was a lopsided final product that shifts around while bearing a load and also while empty.
I built the first one myself and was very disappointed with the results. So I recruited my brother to help with the second one, thinking that a Y chromosome and another pair of hands would help. Well, the same thing happened. After a few hours of effort we didn't finish the job because the final product was clearly going to be another disaster. Customer service was courteous and refunded a portion of the shelves' cost, but that money is going straight to a professional who can fix the train wreck in my living room. Why didn't I just return them for a full refund? Too much hassle. Waiting for them to arrive and then dealing with getting the massive packages up to my apartment was trouble enough. And I do like the design enough to try to fix the shelves now that they're here. However, I would not make a repeat transaction, or recommend these to anyone else."

OK but not great
Date: September 20, 2009
"This was very hard to put together. The screws needed to be put in by an allen wrench and it was very hard. We bought other screws to use. Then some of the other hardware provided did not work and we had to buy other things. Then when all was said and done, the bookcase seemed wobbly, so we bought more hardware to try to stabilize it."

Nice Bookshelf, Serious Design Flaw
Date: September 14, 2009
"This is the largest unit of an attractive line, and should be perfect for a large room. I purchased two. In fact it would be perfect, except for one glaring flaw that, if not corrected, would make it hard for me to recommend to anyone.
The unit assembles basically as two halves, and the linkage is the problem. It's accomplished through six clasps on the shelves of one side that are intended to catch six posts that protrude from the shelves of the other side. The clasps are small, and unless both clasps and posts are positioned just right, will fail to catch. The directions are of no help with this: I learned by doing on the first unit, did better on the second. The clasps are a soft metal, aluminum I think, and so softer than the tools used with them, and too easily subject to damage. And there is no clear "click" or any other signal that they're locked in place.
Except for the clasp-and-post arrangement and the mantle top, there is no further bracing for the unit, another bad mistake. My units are up and look good, but I dread ever trying to move them. I can see them all too easily coming to pieces in the movers' hands.
As with the other units of this series, the wrench provided consists of the same brass material as the screws it is intended to tighten. With great care, it can be made to last for the entire assembly, but if it were steel, there would be no risk.
One more point: Home Decorators needs to do a much better job to lower shipping charges."

Looks good.....
Date: September 9, 2009
"This book shelf looks really nice now that it is together. However, I can say that I have never had an "out-of-the-box" project with so many problems. I had to redrill almost every hole because the screws were much too big for the holes, then, the head so EIGHT of the screws stripped as I was putting them in, even after having the bigger holes so there was not too much tension. I had to replace them."

Happy with purchase.
Date: August 4, 2009
"Bookcase came well packed, no damage. Laid on living room floor for two days until I read and understood parts and had time to put it together! I worked slowly, with coffee breaks to review what I'd done and how to take next step. Took five hours to complete. Many would take less time! I wanted it right. Used wood glue on back dowels. Machining very accurate. Takes a little bit of wrist energy with all the "twist-lock" connectors. Great finished product. Consistant finish, sturdy construction. It's "real" furniture that replaced three old, sagging, "bargain" bookcases. Like the "open" design. I think it was a good purchase and well worth the cost and effort. Thanks."

"The bookshelf came in good condition. It was delivered on time. Even though I ordered the wrong shelf. They cancelled my incorrect order and shipped the correct item in the same amount of time. This was even on a Saturday morning when I called customer service. I will use them in the future and I was pleased with the item I received."

Great bookcase
Date: June 24, 2009
"This bookcase is absolutely beautiful, well constructed, and looks MUCH more expensive than it was. My office is now organized, but also beautiful. I would recommend this bookcase to anyone wanting a classic Mission style, or even Asian style. I had someone else put it together for me, and the only thing he had problems with were making the screw covers stay in. Had I been doing it, I simply would have added a touch of wood glue. Go ahead and buy this--you will love it."

Under Engineered
Date: June 22, 2009
"This is a lovely display shelf but the center section is very poorly engineered. The locking bolts meant to hold the shelves together in the middle did not lock properly and after I put it together, when I went to move it against the wall, the center section fell apart. There are small metal rods that screw into a piece of plastic sunk into one end of the shelves (the other end is attached via heavy duty screws to the outside vertical piece). These plastic pieces are not sunk very deeply into the wood and popped right out when I tried to move the bookcase against the wall. Ultimately, I had to add extra hardware in the form of angle irons to the shelves where they connect in the middle of the unit. I really like the look of these shelves and they're perfect for my need, but the structural design of the center section needs to head back to the drawing board."

Difficult assembly for one person
Date: June 12, 2009
"The shelves are taller (shelf to shelf) than needed, but the difficulty with them is in assembly. This is a two person job to start with so one person can hold things together while the other addresses the locking nuts. These are locking cams are inferior quality and need to be adjust so the seat right. The nuts will strip easily, too. They are the cam type where the post is screwed into one side of the shelves and the cam is then inserted in the other locking piece. The difficulty with the shelve is the back braces, as they're called. They're actually just back guards. They are doweled and have no other way of staying. So, as you're trying to tighten the cams these are constantly falling out. I glued mine. That's why two people are needed. These are nice shelves once they're all done, but they need some attention in detail for instructions. They also need to be anchored to the wall as they're not to sturdy. If you don't remove the wall molding you'll have to rig something behind the top brace to screw into beams."

"This is the worst to put together. It is still sitting in pieces on the floor in my living room after 1 month and I have hired someone to come put it together so I don't have to send it back and incur another enormous shipping charge. After this experience I doubt I will be back."

Worst purchase ever
Date: May 24, 2009
"This is the 9th purchase I have made and the rest were pretty good. But this wone was so poorly made that the interconnectors did not fit with the cams- possibly because all the drilled holes were done incorrectly. When I finally got 2 friends to help me, we thought we got the connections tight, put on the top shelf for stability, and tried to stand it up. At that point the whole unit swayed, losing the back braces and all the interconnectors pulled out of the cams. There is absolutely no way to salvage this piece and I will make sure I never buy anthing from this particular manufacturer ever again. The worst part is I really cant send it back because the boxes were thrown away and I can't use it for firewood because it is stained. Stay away from this piece of furniture. (This was the double bookcase. The single book cases may be sturdier but without braces or a backing I can't see how.)"

not worth it!
Date: May 13, 2009
"Like so many other people, I read all the reviews about this bookshelf before buying it and thought to myself...it can't be that bad! Well, I am here to tell you this 5 shelf mission style double bookshelf is not worth the money. It was hard to put together due to the poor workmanship and there are gaps in between the shelves in the middle section. It took us over 3 hours to put it together because it actually fell apart the first time we attempted to stand the thing upright after we were done. The shelves do not stay together against the center piece along the middle and we even had to creatively use the included "L" brackets on the center piece just to try and give this thing some additional support. I will also be adding more "L" brackets to the underside of the shelves. It looks nice once it is together but it is not a stable piece of furniture and I will NEVER be able to move it, let alone try to move it to another house in the future should I ever need to do so. Not worth it! Find something else for your money...."

Another Mission bookcase
Date: April 16, 2009
"This is the 5th Mission bookcase we've bought from Home Decorators -- all are different sizes tailored to the spaces in the rooms they're in. I appreciate the range of sizes and finishes. With this latest purchase, the shelves are plenty sturdy to hold computer equipment and large, heavy notebooks; we're basically using it instead of a computer hutch on top of a long desk.
These bookcases are still the best combination of price, style, and range of options (I always do plenty of research before I buy). I would definitely recommend to others."

Good value, but needs reinforcement and care
Date: April 8, 2009
"As other people have noted, there is a design flaw in the way the shelves are connected to the vertical supports. The bookshelf uses horizontal screws that go into the wood parallel with the grain, which is a very weak configuration. Also, the holes for the screws are too small, making it very easy to split the wood (happened to me once).
Two tips: 1)coat the screws with a little bar soap. It helps cut down on friction going in, making it easier to put the screws in and lessening chances of splitting the wood (without weakening the product). 2)buy some basic 1.5" brackets and use short, wide thread screws to attach them underneath the shelf corners (try to position the brackets away from the screw holes or you may also split the wood with the screws. also use the soap trick here).
For the money, a very attractive bookshelf. Actually does look just like the photo in the catalog, which surprised me."

"The only problem I had were the pegs with metal tips to hold the center shelves if you get the 54" one. The pegs need to be longer. You have to back them out so the metal head holder will rotate around it. Other than that I would have had it done in 2 hours, piece of cake....: )"

"I love the bookshelf and it was exactly what I was looking for; however, assembly was very difficult for me. The method of assembly should be improved, especially the allen (?)wrench provided. It became quite useless after about 4 screws as the metal was very soft and the sharp edges of the wrench became rounded. I was happy that I had a very sturdy set of allen wrenches to complete the assembly; however, the wrench size needed is just about totally useless now because the holes were really tiny for good sized screws. I also purchased what I thought would be a matching corner bookshelf but the colors did not match. Also, the shelves don't quite reach the center so you can see unstained wood. Overall I'm satisfied but not as ecstatic as I thought I would be."

Assembly Nightmare
Date: January 21, 2009
"While this product looks good in pictures, it was a nightmare to assemble. The directions were clear enough to follow but the locking hardware was of such poor quality, the locks did not hold the screwheads securely. The center of the shelf unit had to be secured to the shelves with "L" brackets (not included in the kit).
My husband's first attempt to assemble the double wide shelf unit ended with him throwing the pieces in the fireplace. I wouldn't let him light the fire. The following day, he went to Home Depot and purchased "L" brackets to secure the two halves of the shelf together."
