Critical comments correct--do not buy!
Date:November 11, 2010
"Please be smarter than I was and heed criticism of this product. I didn’t but now can confirm what’s already been said by others.
Ball bearing failure: I received the chair three weeks ago. Today was particularly sunny and I happened to be looking under the chair. What I didn’t expect to find were 15 (!) ball bearings scattered in the carpet. The top of the bracket that holds the caster “wheel” (a ball, actually) is a cup holding ball bearings. The top and bottom of the cup have excessive play, allowing the bearings to fall out. I expect total castor failure soon will follow. I had read of this bearing problem before purchasing the chair, but figured that if I had the problem, I could install replacement casters. Now I doubt appropriate replacements can be found and installed.
Unsatisfactory seat bottom: Again, as others have written, the seat bottom is poorly supported. It really is little more than an unsupported piece of foam, except for two roughly ½” wide wood pieces that run from the chair’s front to back. And contrary to what I thought before purchase, there’s no easy way to retrofit a solid bottom under the foam. I do not expect the poorly supported seat to last long before failing.
Wobbly: Yes, perhaps at least partially for above reasons, the chair wobbles excessively. For me however this shortcoming is acceptable—were it the chair’s only fault. Instead it is just one more reason not to buy.
Packaging: Lastly, another reviewer already has commented on the packaging mess. The expanded polystyrene foam used does a good job of protecting the chair in transit, but leaves hundreds (thousands?) of tiny white plastic balls to clean up after setting up the chair. Not a deal breaker, but certainly another shortcoming.
Other reviewers also are correct that it’s a good looking chair. And at the current discount, the price is eye-catching. But don’t be mistaken—the chair is unsatisfactory and its faults are uncorrectable. As of today Home Decorators shows that the chair is sold out it one of its colors. I trust this means Home Decorators has recognized the merchandise is shoddy and is discontinuing the chair. Don’t make the mistake of buying any that remain."

Broke the first time we sat on it
Date:October 13, 2010
"It is a beautiful chair, however, it broke when I sat on the chair. I am not a heavy person by any means either (130 lbs.) The wood cracked in the support beams. We only had it for 1 week."

Wobbly Chair
Date:June 21, 2010
"The chair looks good and was a snap to assemble BUT IT WOBBLES FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND BACK AND FORTH. The shaft that connects to the tilt/swivel mech. is smaller than the threaded part of the mech. so it wobbles. Very annoying when you sit in it."

comfortable chair
Date:April 24, 2010
"This was very easy to put together, as there were only 4 screws to install. The seat is well padded and it looks about as plush as it cost. This line of furniture (I've put together a mission desk as well) is sturdy and easy to assemble. They only made me install the minimal number of screws in order to have a small shipping box. In other words, there are many screws holding these pieces together, but you and I are only required to install a bare minimum. Simple directions too and all tools (a hex driver) were included along with a merciful extra washer or two. 2 thumbs up from me."

"Lovely looking chair, caster color, arm-height-under-desk as the exceptions, and for me, the big problem has been how much it wobbled side to side. Chair spindle to chair base bushing clearance is excessive. Front to back you of course never really notice, but lean off to one side and you may feel you're going over. Incredibly, it was much worse than the 40 year old 4-legged desk chair it was replacing. HD did send a freebie replacement, and it was perhaps *1* degree better, but still not really acceptable. I'll be adding shim-stock or finding some other method to sturdy this one, that's for sure.
Also be prepared to unpack this outside unless you have large or double-doors. It's one very big box that won't pass through a 32" door."

Nice design, Terrible construction
Date:November 11, 2009
"I wish I read the other reviews before I purchased this. The chair looks great, is very comfortable and then it fell apart. Ball-bearings all over the floor were just the beginning. The stem holding the chair up did become stripped in a little less than a year. Please heed this advice if you are planning on buying. I wish I did. Other furniture from Home Decorators has always been much better than this chair."

Higher Quality Than Expected
Date:November 2, 2009
"This chair is a quality piece, especially the wooden parts and their finish. I was disappointed however with the casters for three reasons. Their shiny brass finish is not in keeping with the craftsman style. They should have been all black to match the black iron hardware used elsewhere in the collection. The casters, depeding upon their position relative to the chair (either canted forward or backward) cause the chair to be tilted sideways a few degrees much of the time. The casters have somehow lost three ball bearings which I found rolling around beneath the chair on the tile floor."

beautiful and practical

"What a great chair! It adjusts, swivels and rocks and matches the decor. The black leather seat is firm and comfortable as is the back. The only issue is that if you want the arm rests to fit under the desk, they are too high. If that is not a problem for you then this is the chair to buy. It is an excellent value."

Decent chair
Date:August 29, 2009
"Chair is nice and was easy to put together. I took off a star in the rating because of all the styrafoam and the fact that I had to spend 15 minutes vacuuming and cleaning the chair to get all the styrafoam pieces off."

Nothing but repair
Date:March 17, 2009
"My wife and I got one of these about 2 years ago and it is one of the worst purchases we have ever made. First of all, the casters started shedding ball bearings over time so that eventually the rollers do not roll at all. About every two months the chair has to be flipped over to have it's hexagonal bolts tightened back up (must be the old world craftsmanship). One arm has now broken off altogether. This is a cheap, mass-produced knock-off. Buyer beware."

Looks great, but...
Date:February 19, 2009
"it doesn't hold up to regular use. The post screw is stripped, so it won't stay at full height. Once re-adjusted, the locking ring doesn't work, either.
Also, I've had to go to hardware store on two occasions to purchase screw/washers for it after they worked themselves out.
I've found this to be be the case with several products from this catalog. If it looks too good to be true..."

Does Not Hold UP
Date:January 31, 2009
"About 1 year after owning this chair - it just doesn't hold up to the wear that a desk chair receives. Tiny ball bearing are dropping from the mechanism and now after 3 years I am having to use a cushion to hold up to the chair. I do not use this except at my summer home for 2-3 months out of a year."

inadequate padding
Date:December 7, 2008
"This chair looks exactly like what I wanted it to look like, so it looks fantastic. But after sitting in it for about 2 weeks, I noticed the padding didn't hold up. Upon further inspection, I noticed that there is no support under the padding. I am just sitting on foam suspended in midair by the frame. There should be a wood panel or something right under the padding for it to feel right. Right now the padding is concave from having sat on it for about 2 weeks."
