"I have to admit after reading all the reviews about how challenging the assembly was, I was apprehensive. It took a little time reading the instructions and inventorying all the parts but in the end, if you follow the instructions precisely and take your time, end result is most rewarding. I did it alone although two people would have been helpful especially when it comes time to put the top on. Most helpful that all the parts are clearly lettered including every screw and tool. I agree if I didn't read all the reviews I would not have learned the trick to separating the drawer slides. You have to push on the black tab while sliding in the opposite direction. Once open fully you have to squeeze up on the thin black plastic piece inside the slides. This will allow the slides to come apart fully. I love my finished desk and really proud I created to all on my own!"

"I absolutely love my writing desk. My son-in-law assembled it for me. It has worked out wonderfully for me. I am handicapped and was using my daughters dining table. Now I only need one small corner. Thank you."

"Product was damage but it was to heavy to return. Assembly was ok but the magnetic part of the draw doesn't lineup so I had to go the hardware store to purchase a different magnet. Except for the scratchs that are on the desk it fits the area I purchased it for and once I used black polish to cover the scratches it doesn't look so cheap."

"The directions looked a bit intimidating, but were pretty clear once I got started. There were no directions on how to get the siderails apart, but I found them in a product review. There is a little black tab/lever inside the siderail. When it is depressed, it allows the siderail components to slide apart."

"Corner desk fits the space in a guestroom perfectly. Assembly instructions were clear, pieces including hardware were well labeled. Packaging wasn't the best, there were several nicks and scratches which we decided to live with rather than repackage and return."

"This desk was the size I needed for a small room. It was like putting together a puzzle. Like others, I had issues with the drawer not closing properly. I doubt the desk will hold up for long, mostly because of the drawer not closing right and it makes the whole thing kinda chintzy."

"This is a good desk but is not easy to assemble. THe corner drawer is a bear to get together and in the desk. The slide assemblies kept falling out and losing the ballberrings. It is NOT a piece for one person to assemble. Having said that, it is also a good looking desk and very servicable. I would, in the end, recommend it."

A Desk Worth the Extra Work

"First and foremost, I LOVE Home Decorators Collection and have been delighted by all other purchases. I am thankful that I had a solid "heads up" with regard to this desk's assembly, thanks to other customer reviews. This desk is just exactly what I needed in the corner of my hearth room; it works well, especially, because I had planned to paint it from the get-go...and here's why: all pieces come labeled with alpha stickers...a great system, until you attempt to remove the stickers. Doing so smudged the white paint and/or removed it. What's very cool is the fact that all hardware is packaged and labeled...no sorting out of screws and fasteners. However, the lap tray's sliders are a bit of a puzzle; the directions lacking some. (I finally figured out that pressing on the black "plastic" piece would allow them to come apart, but be sure you study how they fit together as you do so. Also be aware that they're a little greasy.) Just be prepared to take your time, ensure the pieces have the holes right side up, and you'll be fine. Now that it's finished, I'm delighted!"

"This is one of many pieces we have put together. We followed all the directions but had trouble with two pieces having stickers on both sides; the drawer guides not installing properly and finally a small gap on both sides of the drawer. Overall for the money, it is good for the purpose we needed. It took us 3 hours to assemble. Looks like the design could have been handled with less parts."

"This desk is exactly what we were looking for. We needed something for the corner where we could set our mail and pay our bills. It's the perfect size for that - plus it also fits a laptop nicely. The assembly took two of us, and as the other reviews state - the directions aren't all that clear for the drawer. However, we knew that going in, paid close attention, thought through how the drawer should work, and didn't have any problems. It's assembled correctly and works great. I was a little wary about purchasing this based on the reviews, but I'm glad I did; It's a solid piece of furniture and it looks great."

"This corner desk is beautiful and looks like it costs much more than it did. My husband and I had a great deal of difficulty with the assembly because we had never worked with drawer guides before. We gave up on the desk until our daughter-in-law came over to give us a hand. She immediately saw that we had reversed some pieces and within a few minutes she had it all fixed with a nice working drawer. It looks great."

"I've put together quite a bit of furniture and have never had an issue. This desk presented a bit of a challenge. The drawer runners came together and needed to be separated and you really have to make sure you are not putting them on backwards otherwise the drawer will not close properly. Contrary to some other reviews it does in fact close properly when it is assembled properly. That said, the directions could be much improved."

"I was able to assemble this desk on my own. Directions and parts were all in the box and it looks great in the corner of my living room now with our new Mac. I have one small complaint about the sliding support bars on the sides of the drawer. They were connected to each other when I opened the package which later in the assembly process I found that they should have been apart. So, I attached them as they were since I was unable to break them away from each other. I obviously made due and put it together anyway, using two less screws. Maybe your pieces will come separated as mine should have.
